  • My channel Coppa update

Well, I see Youtube’s COPPA policy made its way to take effect since today. I got an e-mail and people are telling me about the comments being turned off. I am not sure if comments are just disabled or entirely wiped, but I guess it’s the first. People are afraid of it and wanted to set theirs as made for kids for their content, but I’ll explain it in a short way.

I only watched KreekCraft’s videos on Coppa and FTC. He went to speak with FTC in person and also contacted Youtube. Basically, videos and channels that are marked as Made for Kids has to be really made just for kids alone, like Dora the Explorer, Peppa Pig, Sesame Street, and Paw Patrol. I’m only listing them as the canon way, meaning no parody videos. That alone is what I mean, on content that are made for kids. If you do Dora videos, like Goanimate ones, or if you do crack or parodies with humor added, it won’t be made for kids generally. I know Youtube has machine learning AI that can decide on your videos, but you get less effect from them if you set to channel to what you desire.

But what about MMD videos? MMD videos generally “shouldn’t” be marked as Made for Kids. Many MMD videos are made for dance and music, and many musics are what at least tweens or older people listen to. Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Kesha, Selena Gomez, and Ariana Grande songs are not made for kids, and at least some of their songs are used on MMD videos. MMD isn’t just about dancing with music. MMD is commonly used for Vines, Randomness, Crack, and story driven, and many of them use at least crazy humor and such. That won’t be labeled as made for kids. Youtube can mistaken it with their AI, but generally, MMD can be safe to mark as Not Made for Kids and keep your comments in public and active. If you do MMD videos, I recommend marking them as not made for kids because it’s likely not in the level of Peppa Pig or any of those shows. I use MMD with some humor like Iris, her stink, her cartoonish violence, and yelling like crazy, and the same with my other MMD videos like Miraculous Ladybug. I have mine set to Not Made for Kids since last month after KreekCraft visited the FTC in Washington DC.

So is Youtube’s COPPA policy completely a good thing? No. The way Youtube made their own policy for Coppa, has went a bit too far. Some channels and children’s entertainment (such as Pokemon TV) will be Made for Kids and their comments will be disabled and ad revenue will decrease a lot. Sadly, those comments are important. The Miraculous Ladybug videos from official channel and clips (not crack or most MMD ones) have the comments disabled. I feel like MLB is pretty much affected by Youtube’s Coppa policy in a way. Pokemon video game trailers are not marked Made for Kids for some reason. Many Pokemon MMD videos can be safe to not have it marked as Made for Kids because I see a lot of them use vine audio and such humor. Some or most Pokemon Generation episode is marked as Made for Kids, so we will miss the comment section.

My advice is if you simply want to make videos to not be made for kids to see comments, make sure you don’t follow kid friendly standard like PBS Kids, or shows like Dora the Explorer and Peppa Pig. I know the channels I mentioned got affected, but those channels are held by a company. Many vines or parody channels are fine without their policy affecting your comments or ad revenue. Many youtubers aren’t kid friendly to begin with. Even if you had made some videos that falls closer to be kid friendly, I suggest having the video series or channel marked to what you decide. Having comments is important. I mentioned on my previous post about it.

As for me, I already have mine set to Not Made for Kids to keep comments alive. I’ll tell you how my channel and videos went after this month to see if anything got changed, but likely, it won’t. That’s all my thoughts about this update.
